We’re happy to announce Heat Map Visualization as a first class feature in the WRLD Platform.

Heat maps show spatial point data by representing data density with a color overlay. They’re ideal for helping your users to make sense of big data sets, aiding rapid comprehension and the kind of “aha!” insights that often remain buried in a table of figures.

As you’d expect from WRLD, this new visualisation type works equally well in both indoor and outdoor environments so you can visualise everything from property prices across a city to footfall levels inside a shopping mall.

Feature Details

In designing this exciting new feature we’ve sifted through all the questions and requests from you, our developer community, to make sure we hit the sweet spot for flexibility and ease of use.

  • True 3D visualization takes your data beyond a flat, top-down overlay, allowing you to view your data from different perspectives.
  • A range of customization options allow you to tailor the visualization to your particular use-case.
  • Customize colour ramps to show the range of values in your dataset or to match your brand. Diverging palettes and transparency support help you to distinguish different classes within your data. WRLD Heat Maps work great with colour ramps created with the freely available ColorBrewer tool.
  • Density Stops allow you to visualize data at various levels of detail. Create a “10 thousand foot overview” to summarize your data set then enable your users to drill down to examine the finer detail.
  • Need to focus the user’s attention on a particular area? Or visualizing sparse data that’s only available in particular places? WRLD lets you restrict heat maps to specific areas with polygon bounds.
  • Optimizations to ensure a high level of performance at different scales. So whether you are working with crime levels across a city, footfall within a shopping mall or air quality in an office, WRLD helps you to visualize your data at interactive frame rates across a range of devices.

Who is it useful for?

Heat maps are great for circumstances where your users need to spot patterns and trends in a set of spatial point data. Using heat maps to visualize this data as part of WRLD’s interactive 3D view reduces cognitive load for your users to help them comprehend complex data more easily.

They’re particularly useful for helping your users make sense of the firehose of data generated by IoT devices. Whether the dataset contains footfall levels, air quality measures or temperatures, heat map visualization helps your user wade through it to arrive at valuable business insights. Getting Started

Heat map visualizations are initially available in WRLD’s JavaScript and Android SDKs. We’ll be extending support through our Unity and native iOS SDKs later this year.
